At Tribute Concert, Foo Fighters Are Joined by Drummers Travis Barker, Nandi Bushell, Taylor Hawkins’ Son Shane, And Others Hmm
On September 3, the all-star Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium in London lasted more than five hours, culminating with an emotional, captivating set by the Foo Fighters.
Several notable guests appeared throughout the evening to pay tribute to the late drummer. Many of the Foo Fighters’ most well-known songs were performed during their headlining set, with the assistance of friends and family members who filled in for Taylor Hawkins on the drums.
When Nandi Bushell joined the Foo Fighters for “Learn to Fly,” Grohl described her as “one of the most bada-drummers I’ve ever met in my entire life” and “the biggest rock star on the bill.” “I thought she was joking when this fine young drummer challenged me to a drum battle.” He clarified, “She wasn’t.” “I got into a drum fight, and she kicked my a— in front of everyone.”
Rufus Taylor, the drummer for “These Days” and “Best of You,” according to Grohl, “We’ve known him since he was a child because his father’s band [Queen] is Taylor’s favourite band, and his father, I believe, was Taylor’s favourite singer.”
Following Grohl’s tease of “another little surprise for you,” he invited Paul McCartney and Chrissie Hynde to perform a surprise duet of “Oh! Darling” with her before transitioning into “Helter Skelter,” a song McCartney had never performed live before Saturday night. They hadn’t only never sung “Darling” as a duet, but they hadn’t even performed it live “since we recorded it 100 years ago.” “God bless Taylor,” he concluded.
Omar Hakim, who had assisted McCartney on drums, remained on stage as the Foo Fighters resumed their own hits. “I believe this was Taylor’s favourite Foo Fighters song,” Grohl said.
“Let me tell you, I’ve never seen anyone hit the drums as hard as this person,” Grohl said, introducing the audience to the night’s emotional high point. A photo of Hawkins and his son Shane was projected onto a large screen, and the teenager played drums for an emotional performance of “My Hero,” demonstrating that Hawkins is a family member who deserves to be there tonight with his loved ones.
“I hope you guys felt all of our and all of the performers’ love because we felt it from you, for Taylor, tonight,” Grohl said at the end of the night.
He dedicated “Everlong” to Taylor at the end of a great set, saying, “This one’s for Taylor.”
“Let’s hear it for Taylor f—ing Hawkins right now,” Grohl declared.
